A total n00b writes...

Post by Zwa » Mon Mar 21, 2011 10:09 am

I've got my setup arranged and loaded:

PC with Cubase LE
Tascam US-122MKII
Roland XP80

That's it for the moment. I don't for the moment have any interest in audio recording.

I want to create drum/bass tracks and then add various parts via MIDI from the Roland. However, I haven't the faintest idea how to get started at this. I started off by following the manual but fell over at the first hurdle. Creating a new Project, I don't know which one to start with.

I don't expect to have my hand held all through this process, but I find the user manual too technical and so I'm looking for some resources that don't presume I have any background in digital recording. I watched a few videos on YouTube but they seemed to gloss over the configuration parts and I really need some introduction to the basic concepts.

I guess you all had to be there once upon a time. I guess as well that I could just mess around and find the answers with trial and error, but I'd like to get going a bit quicker than that. So what resources would people recommend? Books? DVDs?

Thanks in anticipation.

Jack

How far along am I? Well, your very helpful pictures were news to me! So many thanks.

I did mess about with VST connections and managed to "play" some of the on-board sounds from my keyboard. I'm not at home so I can't tell you what exactly I did but there seemed to be something called Halion with a bunch of instruments in a drop-down list. I could change these and hear the changes through my headphones. Man, was that a breakthrough!

Are you getting a sense yet of just how clueless I am?

Hold the front page.

Apparently, somewhere on the LE installation disk, are a series of tutorial videos. At least according to the company that sold me the TASCAM audio interface. So I'll take a look when I get home.....

OK

What is your Operating System in your PC :?:
And your using the Tascam 122 as your soundcard :?:
Midi out of the Roland is connected to your Tascam 122 midi in :?:

and you've gone to

1. Devices
2. Midi Device Manager
3. and did this http://home.comcast.net/~halljack505/pw ... anager.PNG

PS: When you mention Halion
I believe that's an Instrument track

There's 3 kinds of tracks

midi track
instrument track
audio track

For Halion check this http://home.comcast.net/~halljack505/pw ... on%201.PNG

I hardly ever use Halion (don't tell steinberg)  ;)

Ok, I'll keep that secret to myself.

Thanks for all your help - I think I'll get somewhere soon. Problem is that I'm at work, and my setup is at home, so I won't be able to do anything for a few hours.....

Hello

just to spread my experiences as well...

I had some good lessons watching the youtube-videos related to the "learning Cubase".

As a hint: Just google to "Working with Cubase" or " Arbeiten mit Cubase"
You'll get some fantastic start-up hints and tipps, which will help you a lot.

Cheers
