Many thanks for all these explanations ! You learn something new everyday. My apologies to Florian, because I caused this OT flow…
Absolutely no apologies necessary! I learnt something as well! 😊 And isn't this just communication? You discuss something, come across a seemingly unrelated question, learn something new... I often enjoy reading such 'off-topic conversations' on this forum.

I have uploaded a new version of Figurato to the repository.

Changes:
  • As requested by many of you, the stacking order has been inverted. Figures are now automatically stacked top-down. Figures in documents that were created with a version prior to 0.3 will look different when you install this version.
  • Accidentals can now be placed both to the left and to the right of the numbers in one figure.
  • Support for parentheses has been expanded (still limited).
  • Minor enhancements to the glyph outlines (many thanks to Abraham Lee for some invaluable feedback!)
I hope you'll find it useful! As always, your feedback is welcome.

(The Mac issue has not been solved yet, but I'm on it.)

figures.PNGThanks a lot Florian for Figurato, it works very well for me and is a pleasure to use.

For what I am doing now, I am trying to enter , to skip layers: I need to have the numbers "hanging" instead of stacking. In the image attached I have typed

,6
246
,,6

Image

and it seems that the ones starting with , gets a different alignment than the middle one. It works if I type a nonbreaking space before the first comma, but maybe I am doing something wrong and there is a better solution?
LAE, with the new version you should get what you want by simply typing: 6 / 642 / 6

Just a short notice:
There's a new version of Figurato on GitHub.

If you are using Figurato it's worth installing the latest version as there are many small fixes and additions that add up to a quite substantial improvement (much better kerning for accidentals and parentheses, added glyphs that were missing before, enhanced outlines).
I've also written up a nicely illustrated manual that should answer most questions, so if you come by, do take a look at the Readme! :)

I have just used Figurato yesterday for the first time (the latest version) and it was a pleasure. A friend of ours’s eyesight is failing to the point where reading facsimiles is becoming too arduous and so I offered to transcribe a Mascitti sonata she will be performing next month. This was a low-pressure project, done quickly and free of charge because she’s been very kind to us in the past. I mention this detail because I don’t want the small issue I encountered to be perceived as a big problem.

The small issue in question is similar to the Qt bug mentioned earlier in the thread, but in this case I am using windows 10 and Acrobat Reader DC. I created a pdf of the score from Dorico, but Acrobat won’t read the pages which include figures (error 135). Oddly, if I drag the same pdf to Google Chrome, it reads it fine. To make sure the group would get the file, I used the Cute-Pdf driver, and the resulting pdf opens everywhere. So it’s minor, but it still concerns me that Adobe’s flagship reader can’t read the file in its entirety because of Figurato. I can certainly give Florian the file if he so wishes.

Claude, that’s very strange. I use Acrobat Pro for all PDF work, and I’m able to open and view PDFs that include Figurato.

Just to be sure, I uninstalled Figurato, reinstalled the newest version just now, and tried it again. It does indeed work fine for me - I am able to open it in Acrobat Pro.

I suspect it's a particular character that's throwing the error. My document is using only numbers and a flat sign. Perhaps one of the other charaters in Figurato is the issue?

Good theory, I am also using 4+ and /6. I'll see what Florian says and we'll take it from there.

Claude, responding here for the benefit of others.

When I opened the file you sent me, I did indeed encounter the same error you had.

Thanks a bunch. What this means is that something happens when this file is exported as a pdf in Dorico. The fault likely lies in the font itself, but we can't be sure until Florian looks at it.

Well, the plot thickens. I opened your Dorico file, exported as PDF, and was able to open it just fine...

So I'm not sure Figurato is the problem. I don't have the nice title page font you used... maybe that's related?

Tried it with your font, and that PDF works fine for me as well. Sounds like it's your Adobe Acrobat. Perhaps re-install? Or maybe something in the export process.

Thanks for reporting this, Claude!

I wonder if this happens now because I have generated the latest otf files automatically with a python script. Maybe I've missed some export settings.

Please, if you can, do send me both the pdf and the Dorico project so I can take a look.
Also, as this seems to be somewhat system related, if you have the time, could you try and export a version of your score without the 4+ and see if AR can read it? I have a suspicion.

(No hurry, I won't have a chance to look at this before next Tuesday.)

I'm glad you enjoy using the font!

Sent! I tried removing crossed figures but the second page still would not display. Only removing all the figures seems to make the document display on AcrobaT Reader DC on my system. But pdfs created by Dan worked. Very strange ...

Update. Still a mystery, but Florian fixed it by letting me install a newer build of the font which magically and fortunately fixed the issue. However, my gremlin is unidentified and likely to remain as such!

Florian, can I ask where we are with MacOS? I seem to remember there was A version that did seem to work well on Mac at some point.
Ah: yes, Version 0.3 works well, it's just the numbers are upside down (Type 46 to get 64).
