Can you elaborate what you mean by "No real surround and multi channel support'?

No work with interleaved multichannel/surround files possible. No support for surround plug ins. No Montage with interleaved multi channel files. No Blu-ray Audio support.
Ok, thanks. Here's hoping it on the cards for Wavelab 9.5!

pwhodges wrote:^ This, in every respect. I note some things in the new GUI which might have been done with multichannel support in mind for the future; I hope that's not just wishful thinking.
This sounds encouraging. Can you elaborate? Also does it run side by side with 8.5?

You can use surround plugins with a surround montage.
You can render surround interleaved files from a surround montage, or from audio files through the batch processor.

But not while editing like with mono or stereo files. For Montage work interleaved surround files have to be split into mono tracks and then rendered back to surround. That is no full surround support like in other Steinberg programs (Nuendo, Cubase) or other competing audio editors. Could it be that the audio engine of WL is not prepared for interleaved multichannel audio files and would need a re-write?

Grace period/cost for updating Elements to 9

Post by Magnus_N » Wed Mar 16, 2016 9:16 am

I bought Wavelab Elements 8 around 1 January. Does this mean that I will have to pay for upgrading to 9?

Best,

Magnus

No rewrite needed. You can already render and to surround files for instance. Some extension of course, but this is before all, a UI work to do.

OK, so I found what I wanted to know. 1 February is the grace period limit. Kind of sucks, though, in my case. Well, I was very happy with the price-performance ratio of the Elements package, a little less so now with this upgrade policy which seems slightly ungenerous.

Thank you!!

This is (for me) certainly a useful step (especially if my surround plugins work as expected), though handling of multi-channel files in the editor is still a highly desired feature - not least to give access to unified noise reduction or spectral editing abilities (which I can do in Adobe Audition or Sony Sound Forge + Spectra Layers - but I'd prefer to be able to use WaveLab).

Using the Audio Montage, you create clips that represent CD tracks. But the audio file itself is preserved and never splitted.

Does this mean that effect/send automation has finally arrived in Wavelab?
Yes, there is both "Blend Wet Into Dry" and "Parallel Processing" options. The blend/parallel level is automated in the clip envelope, same as you would adjust the volume or pan envelope.
Can anyone please explain how this is different to the effect envelopes in previous versions which already adjust the effect's send level?
