It's obvious that there is no problem with the dongles themselves. It's also clear that some of you guys are having problems, while others are not, using the same OS version.

Has anyone done one, or both, of the following tests:
a) Try using your dongle on another computer, running El Capitan. I'm sure you friendly music store can help you with this.

b) Make a clean install containing only the OS and Cubase (to make sure that it's nothing else that cause the problem).

If Cubase work with these tests, at least you'll know that the problem is with your El Capitan install. Not with your dongle.

There are occasions when reformatting the HD and re-installing everything is the only way to sort things out. I do this routinely every couple of years anyway. It usually makes the computer quicker, since lot of junk (from stuff you've installed and removed) gets wiped as a bi-product.

My 2006 Mac Pro doesn't have USB 3.0, so I guess that's not the cause.
That is important information, as we're investigating possible incompatibilities with USB 3.0.

On the other hand, your system (Mac Pro 2006) is not officially supported by El Capitan.
What kind of tweaks did you have to apply to make it run?

I installed it like shown in this video.
It's copying a pre-installed HD image and changing 2 boot files. (And than copying files with migration assistant.)
Like I said, everything was working fine, until I updated from 10.11.2 to .3.

I reinstalled El Capitan (10.11.0) by going to App Store -> Purchased. *Everything is working perfectly now:*
- eLicenser USB is recognized
- My POD HD 500 is recognized
- My Steinberg UR44 -> DAW recordings don't produce a popping sound anymore.

Until we receive further information from Apple, I would advice to roll-back to OS X 10.10.5 in case you encounter difficulties using the USB-eLicenser on OS X 10.11.
I have the same problem where I can't launch Cubase Pro 8.5 on my mac due to the eLicenser problem ever since I upgraded El Capitan to the latest version.

I hope a fix is found very soon, as rolling back to OS X 10.10.5 would be very inconvenient and time consuming. I use My Mac for app development with many other applications which all work fine with El Capitan, not only for Cubase which is the only program that requires a dongle.

Many thanks to MatuX! I had 10.11.4 beta installed when the eLicenser didn't work, so I took MatuX's advice and went to the App Store and just downloaded and installed 10.11.3. When I plugged in the eLicenser again and ran the maintenance procedure everything worked! :) It seems there is no need to roll back to Yosemite or do a fresh install of OS X. Very relieved and happy! :D

Weird, my problem started with the .3 update. I'm back to 10.11.2 right now.

I agree it is weird. Perhaps just the action of reinstalling OS X after you've updated the eLicensor software helps to fix the problem, regardless of which version. Anyway my problem started right after I updated to the latest beta of OS X 10.11.4. Then when I reinstalled the official release of 10.11.3 the problem disappeared.

That's the impression I'm getting as well.
Some users do fix this issue by "downgrading" to 10.11.0, some by downgrading to 10.11.2, some by downgrading to 10.11.3.
The common pattern for fixing this issue seems to be the re-installation itself.
Cubasis wrote:Anyway my problem started right after I updated to the latest beta of OS X 10.11.4.
This is a known issue with the latest beta seeds as confirmed by Apple.
The official 10.11.4 version should be as stable (or unstable) as the previous 10.11.x versions.

And 1 more week went by, with no word from support. So far 3 weeks of silence - great "support"!

Later today I will try to reinstall 10.11.3 to see if I am as lucky as some of you are.
I will return with an update on that project!

I installed the third OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan beta which was released yesterday to public beta testers.
Now everything seems to be working just fine again!

My tests confirm your result:
OS X 10.11.4 Developer Beta 3 (Build 15E39d) seems to integrate Apple's fix that is intended be part of the OS X 10.11.4 release version.

Unfortunately, we haven't yet found the reason for some USB-eLicensers failing to work correctly on some El Capitan systems (10.11.0 - 10.11.3).
We're still investigating and well keep you updated.

Well i am glad that there is hope! But my reinstall did not help at all..

So it seems, that different user has luck with different versions of El Capitan?

Well, I installed the beta as you wrote that everything should be working fine again with that beta. My dongle stopped working somewhere with one of the El Capitan updates and it still doesn't work on 10.11.4 beta 15E39d.

If you really have no idea what the reason is, I surely offer to invite one someone of your development team to give my home a visit to debug my iMac. I do live right in the middle of Hamburg (Grindel).

By the way: if I start Windows in VMWare Fusion, the Windows elicenser detects the licenses just fine.

This might sound like a broken record but is there any developments on this issue? i check every morning and afternoon but there doesn't seem to be any news. Am i right to assume nothing will be done until the next version of El Capitan is released, hopefully next month??? My recently purchased Cubase 8.5 is staring me in the face

Letmein wrote:is there any developments on this issue?
The issue is quite difficult to analyse, because the symptoms cannot be reproduced reliably.

Without knowing what you've tried so far, you might want to check the following:
  • Your USB-eLicenser is connected to your Mac directly, i.e. not via a USB-Hub, the keyboard, etc.
  • After re-installing the eLicenser Control, restart your Mac without the eLicenser connected, then re-connect it after launching eLCC.
Sorry for not having definitive answers yet. I'll keep you updated when we learn more about this issue.

Hi Letmein,

When you say 'everything', does that include reinstalling the latest official public release OS X El Capitan from the app store?

Reinstalling the latest OS X after installing the latest eLicenser software did the trick for me. It didn't take very long and there was no need for me to do a format or reinstall all my other software or anything. Just a quick reinstall of OS X over the existing system got the eLicenser working after running the maintenance tasks on it.

These were the 3 steps that got it working for me:
  • 1. Download & install the latest version of the eLIcenser Control Center (updated yesterday) http://download.steinberg.net/downloads ... ontrol.dmg
    2. Download and install El Capitan OS X 10.11.3 from the app store
    3. Launch eLicenser Control Center and perform the maintenance tasks

I came in here today, to check if anyone had good news, AND to state that its now been 4 weeks, since I have heard from support.

Then I saw Cubasis post, and I did as suggested.
Updated eLcc to newest version.
Reinstalled El Capitan, for the 2. time
Launched eLcc, and performed maintenance tasks.

And.. same story.
