So my current Q6600 with Cubase 5.5.2 can run 63 multiband compressors without ASIO overload at 128 samples of latency on the ProFire 2626.

I had similar results with my 8 core (2 quad Xeons) system. I am looking foreword to getting performance like JMCecil (over 200 tracks) performance with my new Gultown Extreme I recently ordered.

EDIT- Oops, I meant Multiband Compressor channels, not tracks. My DAW did at around 11 to 12 tracks (66 to 72 multiband compressors)

I get over 200 at 44 samples 1ms. 128 samples gets me closer to 300

EDIT: That should 200/300 multiband compressors running, not tracks. I don't know what the track limit will be. I had over 100 tracks streaming that sine clip.

I'm waiting for the 1000 core processor they are working on.

Ok, just got Cubase 5.5.2 x64 set up on the brand new i7 980x. Looks like there is no overclocking on this system, so I'm stuck at 3.33GHz x6.

Of course first thing I did was set up DAW Bench to compare the results of this new machine with my current DAW (Q6600).

Using my ProFire 2626

Q6600 4x 2.4GHz:
64 samples latency: [NOT AVAILABLE]
128 samples latency: 63 Mband compressors
256 samples latency: [haven't yet tested]

i7 980x 6x 3.33GHz
64 samples latency: 152 Mband compressors
128 samples latency: 179 Mband compressors
256 samples latency: 207 Mband compressors

I'm a little disappointed by these results. And I'm also kind of surpised that going from 64 to 128 samples didn't buy me that much. The ASIO meter didn't drop that much when I doubled latency. I start getting ASIO overruns when I hit about 75% of my CPU. All 12 virtual cores appear to be used quite evenly.

I haven't really done any "optimizations" yet. I just installed a fresh copy of win7 x64 and set up cubase with the proper audio interface, disabling CPU Power Saving and setting audio priority to Boost.

Should I be thinking about returning this PC? Is it the ProFire? I'll have to load up all my VSTs and run some of my more demanding projects to see if any of this really matters :)

Incidentally... turning hyperthreading off did almost nothing to chang the performance. I quickly checked at 256 sample latency and was able to go to about 214 mband compressors... about the same as the 207 I got with hyperthreading on. It got a little better... not worse.

Should I leave hyperthreading off? Anything else I should be changing to optimize?

Hyperthreading can degrade performance at low utilization because it has to manage all the processes. At high CPU utilization there are scenarios where it can degrade performance, but in general it should drastically improve performance. Are you sure with it off, that you are only showing 6 cores?

Yes. Only 6 cores. Barely any difference in terms of # of mband compressors.

hmm ... When I get a shot I'll try disabling it. I don't like to jack with my setup now that it is working so well though. :)
